Starling Control in Toronto
The length of a starling is about 19β21 cm (7.5β³β8.5β³), with an iridescent black colour. Starlings harbour several parasites and transmit some disease. They often eat fruits and grain in cattle feedlots and poultry farms. Resident starlings are often joined by other birds. In early fall, migrants merge with residents to form large flocks which are located close to animal feedlots. They can also be found in vineyards eating insects and fruit. By late fall, these birds either stay as residents or migrate south.
When fledglings vacate the nest, they make up families of ten birds that eventually merge into bigger flocks. These flocks are common in summer, and can ruin fruits and crops. These birds inhabit a communal roost when sleeping. The starlingsβ diet is made up mainly of insects and other small invertebrates, and vegetable foodstuffs like berries and some grains. Starlingsβ droppings can transmit dysentery in cattle.
