Stink Bug Control
Stink bugs are commonly 1.7 centimetres (0.67 in) in length, with a colour of brown or black, often with blue markings and alternating dark bands on the abdomen. If you’ve heard about the stink bug recently, it’s probably because this member of the Pentatomidae family has been living up to its reputation as a threat to the agricultural well-being of Canada in general and Ontario specifically.
As recently as 2019, this pest reportedly caused 37 million dollars worth of damage to apples in the mid-Atlantic United States and was spotted in Canada last year. Like many other insects, the bodies of stink bugs are divided into different sections: the abdomen, thorax, and head, all protected by an exoskeleton. These insects feed on a variety of materials, including plant fluids and other insects.
Some varieties use a particular odour to attract mates, while others make a distinctive sound by rubbing their legs or wings together. Stink bugs undergo three distinct developmental stages, unlike many insects that have four. After the first of five molts, stink bugs have small wings that grow longer with each successive metamorphosis until they are fully grown after about a month.
These insects can enter homes and buildings in the fall or winter when the weather turns. Because they can live from several months up to a year, they can become pests that homeowners would rather avoid, necessitating professional pest control. The brown marmorated stink bug is the most likely to invade homes. Their primary means of defense is the odor they emit from holes in their abdomen, which gives them their name.
