The length of a boxelder bug is about 12.5 millimetres (0.49 in), and the colour is dark brown or black with red wing markings. Like its name suggests, the boxelder bug is a pest that lives primarily in the namesake box elder tree. However, they feed on the leaves of maple and ash trees as well in warmer seasons and then seek shelter inside homes as the weather turns colder. These bugs can be identified by their black colouring with red ‘stripes’ along the sides and the thorax.
The eggs are laid in the tree species described above. They molt through several different stages before they become adults.
