Finding insects around a sunny window in autumn can be unsettling, especially when they return after you remove them. For Stouffville homeowners, the useful questions are what insect is present, where it is gathering and whether it is entering from outdoors. Start with identification and a short inspection record before deciding what action to take.
Lady beetles may be seeking winter shelter
Multicoloured Asian lady beetles can gather on sunny exterior walls in fall and enter through small openings. Health Canada notes that homes near fields or wooded areas can be more susceptible. A cluster on one wall deserves a closer look, but the colour or number of spots alone is not enough for reliable identification.
These beetles are useful predators outdoors. Indoors, they can become a nuisance, including appearing around windows again during mild winter weather. Finding them at a window does not tell you exactly which exterior opening they used. Record the room and wall involved rather than assuming the window itself is the only route.
Black insects with red markings need a different identification
Boxelder bugs are another insect that may seek sheltered places in autumn. Adults are dark with red markings and can gather on buildings. University of California IPM guidance describes them as nuisance invaders that do not breed indoors. Take a clear photograph instead of treating all small window insects as the same pest.
If the markings are unclear, keep a safely contained sample for identification. Note whether you are seeing one or two insects occasionally or a repeated cluster. That information helps an inspector assess the situation without guessing from a broad description such as “small black bugs.”
Walk around the outside at ground level
Check window screens, door weather stripping and visible gaps around frames. Health Canada recommends preventing lady beetle entry by repairing openings and screens, with particular attention to sunny exposures. Have suitable repairs assessed where access or building details are uncertain. Do not cover ventilation openings indiscriminately or climb onto a roof to follow insects.
Create a repair list with a photograph beside each item. Mark whether it is a torn screen, a door gap or an opening that needs a contractor’s opinion. Separate what you can inspect safely from work that requires equipment or professional access. This makes the next conversation about repairs more specific.
Remove visible insects and keep a dated record
Vacuuming is a practical removal option for lady beetles and boxelder bugs indoors. Empty or dispose of the collected contents promptly so the insects do not escape. Avoid crushing boxelder bugs against furnishings because they can leave staining and an odour.
Record the date, room, approximate number and whether insects were indoors or on the outside wall. Keep notes after repairs as well. If they continue appearing, the record gives you something useful to discuss rather than repeatedly starting the inspection from scratch. Do not choose an indoor spray just because its packaging says it kills insects; any product must be appropriate for the identified pest and intended use.
Ask for identification before choosing treatment
For an unresolved problem, contact Quality Affordable Pest Control through our Stouffville pest-control service page. Share your photographs and inspection notes, and ask whether an inspection, prevention advice or another response is appropriate. Treatment recommendations should follow the identification and property findings.
